S. Bogolubov, Some Bunny to Love - Sharon Bogolubov
Bogolubov, Sharon Visual Arts Teacher Some Bunny to Love Acrylic on 10” x 12” Paper
Hurricane Sandy pushed a large pine down on my lawn. I couldn’t get it removed right away, so it sat there for months. Then bunnies moved into the bramble that grew around the tree and I didn’t want to remove it. My mother visited me often and we loved watching those bunnies. The tree is gone now and so is my mom. But the bunnies stayed. Whenever I see one, I remember my mom and dream we could enjoy them together again. I imagine those bunnies stopping to smell the roses in my garden, just like my mom would do.

oil on panel, mounted, 18” x 24” 2023

When we rest our eyes on the surrounding nature, in the city, we see the natural growth patterns intersecting with man-made structures. This creates new patterns and a tension between the intersection of observation, pattern recognition, and the nature of materials. The resting gaze is on a view that engages the eyes and lets the mind wander, like dreaming while awake

In my illustration I have combined many drawings, some are just doodles and others are fully rendered drawings. I like to include many skin shades, it is important that people can find themselves in an artwork.

In the center is a black girl in a light pink dress wearing a sash that proudly says “I am Black”
I wanted to show the power and strength of black people.

Many people of different skins are discriminated for how they look and speak. I am inspired by all the people that have experienced discrimination and how they don’t let it affect them.

I started to paint and saw that the colors were the colors I dream about. Sometimes I dream about real life like I’m at school, or at home, or with my dog. Sometimes I dream of the future, and I feel unsure. I just remember to follow my favorite things and what I love like painting, seeing scary movies, and trying out the piano. All art is unique, and I want this work to inspire people to create, be themselves, and follow their dreams.

Each year I work on a folio project with other artists. We all make enough so everyone has a complete edition of everyone else’s work. When twelve artists participate, everyone gets twelve different pieces of art bound in a folio.

The hollowed out cello, represents the body of a person. The painting tells a story of the life of that person. Each part of the painting illustrates a different stage of life. Childhood is represented by the bright colors and the brightness of the candle. The child is unaware of the world and has no idea what waits in the shadows. In the next stage of life the real world reveals itself. The candle develops flaws. The colors become muted as dreams fade away. Old age brings a grayness as the years have melted away. Past memories arise and the person tries to recapture their childhood.

The artwork shows a park overlooking a body of water and in the distance a city. You may think that nothing is out of the ordinary, but if you were to take a closer look, you would find that things are a bit confused. The humans and the birds seem to have morphed into each other. The idea came to me because of my adoration of birds. What I really want people to see when they look at this artwork is the attention to detail. I want them to feel that although the pigeon-headed people are just out for a leisurely stroll, something is very, very odd.

A room is depicted with rainbow brick walls and a black window creates an illusion of endless space, framing a series of rooms extending infinitely. This evokes curiosity, leaving viewers questioning the room's continuity and what lies beyond. Initially I considered a more subdued color scheme however, the vibrant brick wall provides a striking contrast that enhances the enigmatic nature of the illusion. Through the use of patterns, the ongoing repetition of the room is emphasized, contributing to the sense of an infinite space. Ultimately, I wanted to create a feeling of mystery that sparks intrigue for the viewer.

THE BLOOMING OF LIFE
These images came from parts of dreams that I managed to recall. The painting depicts the blooming of human life and nature. It evokes feelings of tranquility. It tells the story of how something grew out of nothing. The person is the main subject. She has the face of a vast mountainous landscape. She is a representation of every human. Flowers bloom from darkness, strong, tall, and bright. The colorful clouds sweep over the girl like a sunset, symbolizing an end to something but also a new beginning. She is a landscape and the landscape is her.

This artwork is surrealistic and illustrates one of my dreams with my favorite winged insects. The image depicts a bright and happy fantasy world. I made the butterflies 3-D to give the feeling that the flowers could fly away at any moment. This signifies the frailty of nature and the importance of protecting the environment.

In my dream, snowmen replaced humans in society. It may sound odd, but in this dream world it was normal. It was a fun pastime that all young snowmen participated in. I wanted my image to feel joyful and carefree, but also leave the viewer wondering, “How did this world come to be? “ I want them to think about this parallel universe and wonder if our traditions and practices are seen as odd or a bit crazy there.

The reason why I drew the lantern angler fish for the topic dare to dream is because I think the lights from the angler fish resemble a lantern. The lanterns represent how the angler fish are able to navigate the dark sea. The lanterns also show how the angler fish are strong enough to hold the heavy lanterns. This reflects dare to dream because angler fish are already unusual fish so the lanterns make them even more unusual and strange. "Dreaming Nurse," shows my dream of becoming a nurse. I used colors to show feelings like warmth and caring, and shapes to make things look balanced and peaceful. While making this, I found out how art can express what I dream and feel. I learned that keeping things simple and clear helps get my message across better. I like how my artwork conveyed my dream in a simple way. There are important qualities a nurse needs to have, like kindness, understanding, and helping people. My work captures the feeling of caring and healing, which are so important in nursing.

Along the empty dark road through the forbidden forest are where dreams are made. The place doesn’t seem real, with blue leaves hanging on trees and purple fog surrounding the area from the purple sky. The bright yellow crescent moon shines above the horizon. This relates the topic “dare to dream” by illustrating the lights on the horizon are where dreams are pursued, however, you must dare to risk crossing through the darkness to reach that dream.

This still life was composed of a boat decoration from my birthday cake a few years ago and a classmate’s wooden box gifted by her grandpa and a makeup bottle. I took a picture from different angles with the lights off and my phone’s flashlight on. I settled with a shot from the top, which revealed all the insides of the box. The items all represent different memories important to us, and the way the boat, box, and bottle fit together look like something out of a pirate’s treasure.

When I was younger my teacher would assign art projects using different mediums and techniques which would push me out of my comfort zone. This resulted in stronger observational skills and grew into an excitement for pursuing art today. Working with my art teacher has helped me feel more confident about my art and I feel ready to take on more challenges. This project helped me to realize that I could take on new challenges, even when I feel like it isn’t perfect the first try.

I typically use layers in my work to juxtapose a sense of organization and chaos. I wanted the fish to convey a sense of freedom in an otherwise structured society; expanding beyond the frame of the work. The three-dimensional elements including the fish were designed in a software program called Paint3D.

This year I learned a lot about AI and how to utilize it to expand on my art more. I think that often society condemns AI for what it can do rather than how it can benefit creativity.

As a child I dreamt of doing art forever, but now I kind of dislike art and what it has become for me. Yet I still make art.

Aaron Phansaithon Gr 10 • My Little Landscapes - Bethany Trust
I dream of a place where I can live and see landscapes like this. In my dreams, my miniature watercolor paintings are invitations to all creatures to exist and thrive in. I have always been interested in collecting tiny things, like coins. Recently, I bought a small paintbrush, which inspired me to create these tiny landscapes but ensured they had all the details. I dream of tiny paintings that are as small as a pushpin but as big as my imagination.
(Note: push pin is for scale, not part of the artwork)

I dream of the “endless fall” where its walls are infinite, and its streams are plenty. The sky is always at set. This place is a safe space with minimal rules, and the Korneeliuses stalk harmlessly watching in the tree shadows. WeirdCore’s newest dream dimension. Just…don’t swim in the water….

Alana Lawrence Grade 12 • Peer Pressure - Bethany Trust
I dream of darkness. The shadows of my existence haunt me. I shiver with all inability to move. Is this what you call daydreaming? Because if it is, I never want to dream again. My retinas are unable to reach the surface due to my closed eyelids. It's weird, that dream I had. It's almost like a painted picture of the pressures of my life. This uneasy feeling is unable to be described. I open my eyes. It's a picture called Pure Pressure I created. But then reality haunts me once again, so I go back to dreaming of darkness.

Insiya Yasifa Mamun Grade 12 • Sorrow of the Sea - Bethany Trust

I dream of becoming my best self. A self who strives to be nothing but their own unique identity. My piece shows my dreams of wanting to be my best self, firstly, in the pose of the mermaid. She looks sad from her worries. Wanting to be her best self but facing obstacles that keep her from doing so. The blue/green tones of the piece is one way to show the present yet unseen hindrances. The mermaid being underwater shows the feelings of not being able to express oneself - restrained. Thus, comes the dream to be myself.

I dream of a life without struggle. In today’s world, it is so easy to be taken away with life, you feel overwhelmed and dead inside. They say, “Go wherever life takes you,” but feel like that statement underestimates the true power of a lost life. This artwork demonstrates that struggle, one where your dreams are washed away, and you have nothing to do but reach out for help. Maybe someone is there to pull you out of this mess, but sometimes the only person who can save you from those demons is yourself.

A girl dreams. Grass grows. What if our environment was allowed to flourish as much as our dreams do? I hope my children will dream big for themselves and I pray for the restoration of our planet. We can co-exist with the visions from our dreams.
