Harrison Bevan • Grade 4 • "All the Greatest Things in Life"
My artwork shows how my depression effects my life even while doing my favorite thing, drums.

My emotions in the artwork are sadness but also happiness. Back in Quarantine, I was spending hours online and when I found drums it was a new way to spend time.

The story behind this is that I’ve been struggling with depression for three years because of loneliness and staying inside for long periods of time. My background is a blueish purple which is popular in a jazz setting. The blue shows sadness and the red is anger.

Antonella Jimenez • Grade 4 • "The Confusion"
My name is Antonella and this is my self-portrait. I put the question mark because I zone out and can’t stay on schedule. I put the heart because I am very kind and sensitive. I painted my cat and old parakeet. I’m nice to them so sometimes my cat sticks around me.

In the corner, you see a small figure of my mom yelling “YOU’RE LATE” because like I said, I have a hard time staying on task.

I learned a lot about Frida Kahlo. For example, drawing and expressing my feelings just the way Frida did.

Ava Lovejoy • Grade 4 • "Self Portrait"
Art to me is therapeutic and fun! I added personal things like the death of my great grandma.
This art project was my best work because of how well I drew my eyes and face realistically.

I drew myself holding a puppy and smiling because I am always smiling and confident. Painting with watercolor paint was very fun.

Matching colors to my skin tone was difficult. I added a black heart on my cheek. I made a mistake and colored over it! Sometimes people face challenges when creating art. I made some mistakes but I love the result!

Zariahlyn Martinez • Grade 4 • "My Self Portrait"
My artwork shows my feelings and everything about me.

My feelings are sad and mad. I have friend problems and all these feelings hurt. I was feeling sad and mad because my grandpa is not alive, and he got me that rose and skirt. And all these things hurt like a thorn on a rose.

The challenges I faced is not giving up and I solved it by my art teacher telling me that my art is beautiful. I did a good job drawing my problems in the background which are my friends’ problem, my grandpa, and overthinking.

Audrey Matulik • Grade 4 • "Emotions"
My artwork shows that I’m gloomy in my living room. My feelings are sad and scared.

I took the risk to show my trauma because it was challenging to show that in my artwork.

I am sad because my mom and dad are yelling and I thought of past events. My anxiety is effecting me.

The concern is that my mom and dad are yelling. I used rectangles for slanted sad eyebrows and ovals for hooded eyes to show my emotions.

I think the way I showed my emotions on my face is powerful.

This project is one of my favorite and best projects because it lets people understand me better and addresses my favorite things.

I enjoy drawing and music. Whenever I get mad or upset, music helps me.

One can also express many emotions in music and art. If you feel upset, you can add what expresses the emotion you are feeling.

I enjoy playing basketball, as it is a challenge, requires a lot of work, and is fun. It is a challenge that may seem impossible to overcome but if you give up, you might miss out on enjoying it.

Yasmin Nakagawa • Grade 4 • "The Pressure On Me"
My artwork shows the pressure that my family, friends, and some teachers put on me.

They are represented in the background. Red is my favorite color and stands for passion, especially for Art. The school, belt, and computer represent the classes I am taking.

Around me are green waves that show I feel calm sometimes. Just like Frida Kahlo who experienced pressure in her life when she was in New York with her husband Diego Rivera and wanted to return to Mexico, I felt like I could relate to Frida Kahlo when creating this portrait.

Ema Petrovic • Grade 4 • "Feelings"
The feelings in my artwork show my personality and me being left out, questioning if I am good enough.

I feel I was brave by opening my heart out to the world. I used different colors to communicate my feelings in my artwork, in the hope that others can relate to my experience.

Kind Avenue is there to show that being kind matters and because people can be mean for no reason. It’s important to be kind because if someone is mean to another person the other person could turn into a bully and it might happen again.

My artwork has a light blue background with a pink and white swirl mix. I feel like when I was painting it, the emotions that I wanted to make people feel was happy and I just wanted them to realize the beauty of the world around us.

As I said before, I wanted people to see my artwork and feel joyful and happy.

The story behind this artwork is that one day my mom was driving me home and I was bored so I looked out the window and the clouds WERE PINK and it reminded me of cotton candy.

Sofia Machado • Grade 5 • "Sibling Love"
I made my art work with oil pastels and black paper. The chicks symbolize positive relationships, such as the one between me and my family. They are meant to show a feeling of caring and compassion. I was inspired by spring and family, especially my little brother Daniel, so the chicks are siblings. I believe a good quality of my artwork is how I used the oil pastels to create 3D looking baby chicks. Making this was very relaxing.

Jahvion Flanders • Grade 10 • "State of Tranquility"
The story that I wanted to convey with my work is that when you focus on yourself and embrace tranquility, you will achieve the best version of yourself.

Whether it is peace of mind or improving your mental health, I wanted to symbolize in my work, what you may become at the end of finding that peace in yourself-something like an unstoppable being or force.

For the artistic features, I used the more cool hues, such as variations of green and blue and a white aura/glow around me in order to establish a powerful presence.

Emma Grigoryev • Grade 11 • "Weight Around"
Weight Around displays a personal problem. The artwork represents a complex decision I have to make concerning my future.

Side with the left side and explore my passion for art, or side with the right side and put all my effort into academics?

Currently the right side weighs lower thn the left. As a full time student, its impossible to find free time to explore my creative side, thus the me sitting on the left is lighter in weight.

So I have to weigh my choices, should I wait around until I’m done with school to focus on my art?

Subhah Hoque • Grade 10 • "Encounter"
I didn’t originally intend for there to be a concrete story, but one unfolded in front of me as I worked on the piece regardless.

In doing so, a tale of discovering a foreign object in the depths of space suddenly took over my screen.

This piece surprised me in how it came to life so easily. I had vague desires of what I wanted, yet the ease with which it all weaved together made it both a fun and swift journey.

Sharon Li • Grade 10 • "Witness of Time"
My artwork reflects my depiction of the concept of time and my concern of how overwhelming and confusing it can seem. I portray time as another dimension that is other worldly and unfathomable because to me, time is a concept that may seem blunt but is actually quite complicated.

This piece tells a story influenced by personal experience such as the constant struggles regarding time or lack thereof. For example can pass by excruciatingly slowly but then suddenly a year has passed and everything changed.

The art conveys the idea that despite affecting everything, in the world, time remains an intangible force.

E Perez • Grade 11 • "Burnt Out"
At the beginning of the creation of this art work I had no plan. I felt no sense of motivation or creativity. The art work wasn’t the easiest for me, but the more time I spent working and making changes to it, the project started springing a sense of direction to me.

By the end, I felt l learned a lot from the tools I was already using. Although I think the project turned out to be pretty good, it doesn’t spark a sense of pride. Instead, I can only sense the feeling of art block. The title , “Burnt Out”, came from this feeling.

Trisha Primus • "Underwater House"
My artwork is a house that is covered up with blue textures as if it is in the ocean. To top it off I add a fish, a dolphin, and a seashell.

The concern I am telling in my work is how some countries will be underwater by 2030 due to climate change. I am trying to alarm people that this is an issue and we must do something about it.

Leandra Ramos "Besos y Lágrimas - The Totally Real Telenovela"
The artwork I made was representative of a telenovela poster.
I recreated a stereotypical telenovela poster, using aspects like a dramatic background, the translucent faces in the background and the images of the “main” characters.

I made the artwork for a graphic design class assignment, which is why in the artwork each “character” is portrayed by me.

The assignment was to photoshop ourselves in any sort of situation we wanted to, using the skills we had learned in the past semester. So I chose to make myself into a telenovela poster since I coincidentally finished watching “Jane the Virgin” that same day.

Romy Swisa • Grade 11 • "29th Victory"
“29th Victory” depicts the overseer known as the control devil. Through use of color associations, red is most prominent in the piece to represent vigor, danger, and courage. Black and gray details are also present to serve as mediators-sophistication and authority. The yellow glow in the eye draws attention to the center of the piece while cautioning the figure’s jurisdiction through an element of intimidation.

Cosplay is a hobby I am very passionate about; to be able to combine it with art and emulate so many feelings using graphic design is something I have utmost pride for.

This is an artwork featuring myself as a biblically accurate angel, with extra eyes and wings and rings in front of an apocalypse. I am feeling empowered and honestly a boss. Here, I am a liberated fallen angel that is ready to make her comeback.

After I fell from heaven, I have been wronged, and I need to find myself again before returning to greatness. Crawling out from the pits of Hell, my new place is the ruler of Earth.
